This research project aims to gather and assess baseline data on oligotrophic lakes, allowing for their characterisation under the EU Habitats Directive. A multi-disciplinary research team, comprised of researchers from the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre (MFRC) of GMIT and Roden Ecology, will determine what physical, chemical and biological monitoring methods and assessment tools are needed to evaluate their environmental condition. Study sites include lakes and pool systems located within the Connemara Bog Complex SAC near Oughterard and Recee. Recommendations from the project will consider a conservation assessment framework and propose measures needed to maintain/restore these lake habitats to favourable conservation status.
